Some places reveal more history than construction dust—and that’s exactly what makes them so exciting. Today, the Bel Étage of the former Institute for the Sugar Industry has a different pulse: cutting-edge medicine, technology, and forward thinking. Kinzo did not reinvent this place for the German Heart Center Berlin Foundation, but rather continued its story—layer by layer, color by color. A listed building was transformed into a tech hub that not only offers jobs but also makes a statement: tradition meets innovation, and the two get along splendidly.

Transformation of listed buildings into modern tech hubs

Around 800 m² for research, exchange, and idea development. Kinzo orchestrates the complete transformation: inspiring workspaces for 20 employees, complemented by workshop rooms and custom-made fixtures—from kitchen counters to the integration of an LED wall in the lecture hall—as well as an open kitchen as a social hub.

The pulse of transformation

A finely graded red runs through the space like a visual pulse. It stands for energy, vitality, and change—and makes it clear what drives the DHZB Foundation. Historical elements have been carefully exposed and combined with contemporary materials. The old archive shelf remains—reinterpreted as a statement of continuity. A greening concept by P2 Objektgrün provides lively accents.

The rooms breathe, and that suits a place where people work every day on the future of cardiac medicine.

A bold pace
With the transformation of this listed building, the DHZB Foundation is taking a stand: tradition and progress do not have to be contradictory, but can together set the pace for a better future.
