Deutsche Bahn Gasometer

From Gas Tank to Think Tank

When a place has made history and is also meant to shape the future, it takes more than just a traditional office. The Gasometer on the EUREF Campus is exactly that kind of place: a 78-meter-tall steel structure with golden rivets that dominates the Berlin skyline—an architectural landmark is becoming the centerpiece of a real-world laboratory for the energy and mobility transition.

At this new location, Deutsche Bahn is bringing its digital, technical, and innovative expertise together under one roof for the first time.

The Gasometer was intended to become a shared hub for digitalization, technology, and innovation—with the clear goal of fostering cross-departmental collaboration and advancing future-oriented mobility solutions.

From the client’s perspective, the brief was clear. Teams that had previously been spread across numerous locations in Berlin were to be brought together: shorter distances, more direct communication, and everyone in one place—and we translated this into spatial designs.

Within the historic preservation zone, we developed a contemporary “New Work” and office concept featuring flexible workspaces, meeting rooms, and workshop areas, as well as communal spaces for spontaneous interaction and quiet zones for focused work. Activity-based working became the guiding principle.

The planning process was central to this effort. Through an intensive, team-oriented participatory process, we worked closely with the client, involved employees early on, and systematically translated their needs into spatial modules.
The industrial heritage was deliberately left visible—and became the defining framework for a workplace that embodies one thing: Together. Digital. Future-oriented.
