Simplicity versus identity in a place in transition

New Work, Berlin, 2023

In the vibrant streets of Berlin, where innovation and history meet at every corner, a new vision of workspace has been created by Kinzo Architekten for the start-up Grover.

A remarkable transformation is taking place at the intersection of Potsdamer Strasse and Bülowstrasse in Berlin, where the paths of history and the present cross. The Bülowstraße subway station, an Art Nouveau jewel dating back to 1902, is a symbol of the city's turbulent past and a witness to a new era of urban development. Here, where the elevated railroad intersects the streets of Berlin, a space is being created that reflects the diversity of modern life.

The open space work areas are arranged as rings around the central shared inner courtyard: The outer ring with homogeneous team benches and an inner ring with a variety of different meeting points.

With these specifications in mind, we kept the architectural elements that create the atmosphere – the ceiling, columns and façades – largely exposed and raw. Rooms were adjusted to allow the space to flow as much as possible.

Designs were developed for the four building sections of the rental space, which in some places provide an independent recognition value through a high-contrast material concept.

The eight-storey tower has been given a new, light-colored façade made of metal and glass that undulates around the building. Pecan Development was responsible for the revitalization of the entire quarter and developed the concept together with the Berlin architectural firm Gewers Pudewill.

The architects from Kinzo were faced with the task of combining simplicity with identity while paying tribute to the existing architecture. They created open workspaces arranged around a central courtyard to encourage collaboration and communication.
